De Antichrist (Grieks: ἀντί= in plaats van, niet tegen! χριστός= Christus = in plaats van Christus: velen denken dat het woord "anti" in dit verband alleen "tegenstander" betekent) is volgens de christelijke leer de ultieme manifestatie van het kwaad in een menselijk wezen. Het begrip komt in de Bijbel voor in de brieven van Johannes. In de Openbaring van Johannes, het laatste boek uit het Nieuwe Testament, komt het woord antichrist niet voor, maar naar de overtuiging van sommige christelijke stromingen wordt de persoon daarin wel beschreven en het beest genoemd.
Een meer wetenschappelijke verklaring voor 'het beest' is dat deze benaming zou slaan op keizer Nero. Deze keizer stond bekend om zijn wreedheid, die zich o.a. uitte in de vervolging van de christenen. Het getal '666' zou ook slaan op keizer Nero.
De Antichrist is tevens de titel van een van de latere werken van de Duitse filosoof Friedrich Nietzsche. In dit werk neemt hij zeer stellig afstand van de joods-christelijke religieuze tradities, die hij opvat als een decadente slavenmoraal.
For the sake of speculating on a very interesting question that may appeal to Bible nerds (which include even atheists such as myself), let us imagine that an Antichrist figure is to arise in the last days of earth's history. Whether this Antichrist is the Devil himself or his special agent, the question is this: Does he not know how to read? If this biblical Antichrist were to read the Book of Revelation, would he not realize that he is ultimately going to be on the losing side in the final battle? Presumably he would know from prior skirmishes that the God he opposes is all-knowing and all-powerful, and that he therefore has no chance of emerging the victor. That being the case, why would the Antichrist even bother? One can understand why Satan would try to intervene in human affairs when he thought he had a chance, such as when he tried his hand at tempting Jesus to sin. But in cases like the one before us, in which we all know the ending along with the hypothetical Antichrist, what is the logical and rational point of even trying?
